When you add a pallet, Electrode Design calculates the safe height in machine coordinates to which you may lower a machine head without contacting the pallet/workpiece assembly.

You can access the calculated value in the mset part via an expression named WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT. (Note the difference in spelling from the expression in the workpiece, WORKPIECE_HIGH_POINT.)

WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT is calculated as the higher of the top of the pallet or the top of the electrode, as measured along the Z-axis of the machine coordinate system, plus the delta that you specify in your mset seed part.

The following cross-section views show how the WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT is determined.

In the illustration below, the PALLET_MSET_ORIGIN (1) and the PALLET_MATE_ORIGIN (2) have different origins. Electrode Design compares the height of the pallet along Z 0.0 of the machine coordinates (1), to the actual height of the workpiece (3) plus whatever offset it has in the assembly to rest on the surface of the pallet (4) at the PALLET_MATE_ORIGIN. Since the top of the workpiece is higher, the Z height of the top of the electrode is the value assigned to WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT. If delta is not zero, the value delta is also added into WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT (5).

In the example below, Electrode Design finds that the pallet height (1) is higher than the high point of the workpiece (2), thus WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT reflects the pallet height above machine CSYS Z 0.0, plus delta (3).

Electrode Design also adjusts if the machine coordinate system is at an angle to the pallet or electrode CSYS. In the example below, the machine coordinates are at the hinge of a sine plate (1). WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT reflects the height of the workpiece above the machine coordinates Z 0.0, corrected for the angle of the workpiece (2). This was compared to the high point of the pallet, which also was also corrected for the height of the machine coordinate system. The workpiece is higher so that height plus delta (3) is assigned to WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT.

In the setup below, the pallet is higher than the wokrpiece (1), so WORKPIECE_HIGHPOINT reflects that height plus delta (2).

The dimensions at the left show the adjusted electrode high point (3) according to the angle of rotation of the electrode about the machine coordinate system (4).
