      <p class="para_topic">You can use the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box to assign specific attributes to a weld feature. These attributes are saved in the ugweld.dpx file. You can modify attribute title, type and values. There are two broad categories of Characteristic types: Ordinary (Integer, Real, or String) and List. List Characteristics are always of the string type and possess default values defined in the ugweld.dpx file. You need to define the <b class="uiTerm">Type</b> for Ordinary Characteristics.
      </p>

      <p class="para_division">To access the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box, click the <b class="uiTerm">Characteristics</b> button (where available) on a weld dialog box when in the insert or edit mode.

      <p class="para_division">To add a new characteristic, select any of the available characteristics from the <b class="uiTerm">Available Characteristics</b> listing window. The initial values are displayed in <b class="uiTerm">Title</b>, <b class="uiTerm">Type</b>, and <b class="uiTerm">Value</b>. You can modify the <b class="uiTerm">Title</b> and <b class="uiTerm">Type</b> (except for List Characteristics) and <b class="uiTerm">Value</b> (which is unavailable for List Characteristics). To add this newly-modified characteristic, choose <b class="uiTerm">Add</b>. The characteristic appears in the <b class="uiTerm">Applied Characteristics</b> list.
      </p>
      <p class="para_division">Adding a Process Control, Dimensional Control or a Key Product Characteristics (KPC) characteristic to a <a class="links" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="top.openFile('weldassistant/weld_point_ov.html');return(false);">weld point</a> displays it with the qualifying font.

      <div class="title_division">Edit</div>
      <p class="para_division">To edit a particular characteristic, select it on the <b class="uiTerm">Applied Characteristics</b> list. The characteristic's values appear in <b class="uiTerm">Title</b>, <b class="uiTerm">Type</b>, and <b class="uiTerm">Value</b>. You can modify these specifications and then choose <b class="uiTerm">Edit</b> to edit them. The edited characteristics are reset in the <b class="uiTerm">Applied Characteristics</b> list.
      </p>
      <div class="title_division">Remove</div>
      <p class="para_division">To remove a particular characteristic, select it in the <b class="uiTerm">Applied Characteristics</b> list. The characteristic's values appear in <b class="uiTerm">Title</b>, <b class="uiTerm">Type</b>, and <b class="uiTerm">Value</b>. Choose <b class="uiTerm">Remove</b> to remove the characteristic. The selected characteristic is removed from the <b class="uiTerm">Applied Characteristics</b> list.
      </p>
      <div class="title_division">Inherit</div>
      <p class="para_division">Choose <b class="uiTerm">Inherit</b> to apply characteristics of other similar welds on the selected feature. The <b class="uiTerm">Select Weld Feature</b> dialog box appears, listing all the available similar welds.

      <p class="para_division">Select the weld object and choose <b class="uiTerm">OK</b>. You are returned to the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box, which now lists all the inherited characteristics in the <b class="uiTerm">Applied Characteristics</b> list.
      </p>
      <div class="title_division">Reset</div>
      <p class="para_division">Choose <b class="uiTerm">Reset</b> to restore the initial values in the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box.
      </p>
      <div class="title_division">Customizable Characteristic Symbols</div>
      <p class="para_division">The <b class="uiTerm">Weld Assistant Customer Defaults</b> file allows you to choose from a fixed list of markers and the full range of colors in the <b class="uiTerm">NX</b> color palette to define custom markers and colors for characteristic attributes on spot welds. When you are creating or editing a characteristic attribute, the marker and color display of the welds changes in the model.
      </p>
      <p class="para_division">Use this feature to set up a custom marker and color for any spot weld that has a characteristic attribute. You can add new types of weld joints; for example, you can specify a marker for self-piercing rivets that uses the <b class="uiTerm">Spot Weld Create</b> menu with a characteristic attribute to define the location. The display on the model will reflect what you specify in the customer defaults file. 
      </p>
      <p class="para_division">Using the <b class="uiTerm">Customizable Characteristic Symbols</b> feature, you can:
      </p>
      <ul>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Set up a custom marker and color for any weld spot that has a characteristic attribute. </p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Add new types of weld joints; for example, specify a marker for self piercing rivets, which would use the <b class="uiTerm">Spot Weld Create</b> menu with a characteristic attribute to define the location. The display on the model would be whatever you specified in the customer defaults file.
            </p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Specify the relative importance of each weld and have the marker modified to convey importance while retaining the number of panels being joined. This feature is enabled when you select a set of general symbols to be used for 2-, 3- and 4-panel combinations, and then another set of symbols to be used when the qualifier attribute is assigned, again supporting 2-, 3- and 4 panels.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Add a custom characteristic symbol on a spot weld to convey how many panels are being joined. </p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Set up qualifiers on a spot weld and have the marker change accordingly. </p>
         </li>
      </ul>
      <p class="para_division">You can set up custom markers and colors in the <b class="uiTerm">Customer Defaults</b> dialog box under the<b class="uiTerm"> Weld Assistant Characteristics</b> menu as follows:
