In NX you can use a reference set to group the objects in a .prt file. An object can belong to more than one reference set at a time. Conversely, an object need not belong to any reference set.

For example, suppose you have a .prt file that contains eight objects with three reference sets. The first reference set contains objects 2 and 3; the second reference set contains objects 3, 4, and 5; the third reference set contains objects 7 and 8. You can refer directly to a reference set to include only the objects in that set. If you refer to reference set two, you would include only objects 3, 4, and 5.

There are always two default reference sets, called Entire Part and Empty, available in NX. The Entire Part reference set includes all the objects in the .prt file, and the Empty reference set does not include any objects. You can also create your own reference sets to group objects in the file.

When you reference a component .prt file from a higher-level .prt file in a hierarchy, you must specify which reference set to use in the component file.

When you have a NX dataset with a hierarchy, you should always load the top-level .prt file into the NX interface translator. If you load the top-level .prt file, the only objects translated are the objects in the reference set specified for each component file. The hierarchy of the resulting JT model matches your NX hierarchy.
