How close the triangles approximate the surface or solid.

English part values must range from .0001 to .1 inches with a default of .003. Metric part values must range from .0025 to 2.5 mm with a default of .08. A triangulation tolerance value of about one–half or one–fourth the rapid prototyping machine's resolution is reasonable.

A good rule of thumb is to use a triangulation tolerance smaller than the smallest radius of curvature in the part. Selecting a value equal to the radius makes the smallest curvature (that may be the sides of a hole or pin) come out with 3 or 4 sides. Often better accuracy is desired. On the lower side it is not practical to specify a tolerance much smaller than the resolution of the rapid prototyping machine to be used. Smaller tolerances make the output file larger with little benefit in the accuracy of the final part. Depending on the process, features with a size as small as several times the machine's resolution may become distorted or even lost.
