      <p class="para_topic">The IGES, STEP, DXF, DWG, CATIA V4, and CATIA V5 translators are available under <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Open</b> and <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Save As</b>. You can open and save foreign files such as IGES, STEP, DXF, DWG, MODEL, CATPart and CATProduct. The basic process works the same for each translator. For specific information on each translator, go to that translator's specific topic.

                  <p class="para_note_body">You should use the <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Open</b> or <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Save As</b> commands to open smaller foreign files. The <b class="uiTerm">Open</b> and <b class="uiTerm">Save As</b> commands are designed more to handle components than large assemblies. When you have larger foreign files, you should use the appropriate translator through the <b class="uiTerm">Import</b> or <b class="uiTerm">Export</b> commands. These commands launch the translator in the background so that you can continue working within NX.&nbsp;If you have several foreign files to translate, you should use the Java user interface from <b class="commandName">UGMenu</b>.

                  <p class="para_note_body">In general, you can estimate that the translators will take about one minute per megabyte of data in the foreign file.&nbsp;We recommend that you have at least one gigabyte of memory and two gigabytes of swap space available when translating files. The performance you see during <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr; Open</b> and <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Save As</b> will depend on these factors as well as on the speed of the machine on which you are running NX.

      <p class="para_topic">When the translators run under <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr; Open</b> or <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Save As</b>, they read the default file in the translator's installation directory which is typically $UGII_BASE_DIR/&lt;translator directory&gt;. You can also set the appropriate environment variable (for example, IGES_DIR) to point to the translator's installation directory.

      <p class="para_division">When you choose <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Open</b> an <b class="uiTerm">Open Part File</b> dialog box will appear. You can choose the IGES, STEP, DXF, DWG, MODEL, CATPART, and CATPRODUCT filters. There is an <b class="uiTerm">Options</b> button available at the bottom left corner on the <b class="uiTerm">Part File</b> dialog box. When you select an IGES file filter, this button will be enabled. If you click on this button, it will start another dialog box, You can use this dialog box for setting various options and parameters. If you modify the options on the dialog box and click <b class="uiTerm">OK</b>, the IGES file will be opened with the options specified in the dialog box.

      <p class="para_division">The <b class="uiTerm">Options</b> dialog box is similar to the dialog box which displays when you select <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Import</b>.

      <div class="title_division">File&rarr;Save As</div>
      <p class="para_division">When you choose <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Save As</b> a <b class="uiTerm">Save Part File As</b> dialog box will appear. You can choose the IGES, STEP, DXF, DWG, MODEL, CATPART and CATPRODUCT filters. There is an <b class="uiTerm">Options</b> button available at the bottom left corner on the <b class="uiTerm">Save Part File As</b> dialog box. When you select file filter (IGES, DXF, and so forth), this button will be enabled. If you click on this button, it will start another dialog box. You can use this dialog box for setting various options and parameters. If you modify the options on the dialog box and click <b class="uiTerm">OK</b>, the IGES file will be saved with the options specified in the dialog box.

      <p class="para_division">The <b class="uiTerm">Options</b> dialog box is similar to the dialog box which displays when you select <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Export</b>.

                  <p class="para_note_body">On the <b class="uiTerm">Files</b> page you can see that the <img align="bottom" src="../graphic_library/icons/dialogs/gateway/visualization_preferences/open_cdf.gif" border="0"> button is disabled in both cases (<b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Open</b> and <b class="uiTerm">File&rarr;Save As</b> dialog boxes). This is a limitation of the dialog box. If you want to specify different settings files, then you can type in the name of the settings file in the provided dynamic input string box.
