How do I find any summary and error messages from a translation?

When you translate one or more files, a log file is created in the same folder/directory as the output files. It will have a <.log> extension, and a root name that corresponds with the input file name. If a list of files was specified, the log file will be named after the first file in the list. The external user interface will display the name used in the lower right portion of the main dialog box.

How do I create modify a base part to incorporate changes I need?

Base Parts are standard NX parts, which have been created ahead of time with standard NX part information. Therefore you can modify Base Parts as you would any NX part. You can open a new NX part or you can open the one supplied in the translator installation directory. You make the necessary changes to this NX part and save it as appropriate.

You then have to edit (using a standard editor or word processing application) the Settings file you will be using and update or add the appropriate parameter. For example for IGES the default is to use the Base Parts found in the IGES installation directory named:

BASE_PART_IN=igesnullvnx40_in.prt

BASE_PART_MM=igesnullvnx40_mm.prt

If you changed the metric part, and saved it to d:\supplierA\startpart.prt, then you would update the parameter as follows.

BASE_PART_IN=igesnullvnx40_in.prt

BASE_PART_MM=d:\supplierA\startpart.prt

There is a standard Base Part for MM and Inch parts so make sure you modify the appropriate one.

Even though you cannot directly modify this parameter via the user interface, the parameter and value are retained even if the User Interface is used to make other changes are made to the Settings file with this information in it).

What is the difference between INFO messages and WARNING messages in the log file?

INFO messages convey information that inform the user of events (typically benign) that occur during translation that are slightly out of the ordinary. These events do not affect the quality or success of the translation.

WARNING messages are issued when the translator does something that may be of interest to you. Warnings could indicate when a tolerance has been used during import that is looser than the one that has been specified. A warning might indicate that an improper construction was found in an IGES or STEP file – along with how it was handled. Generally, warning messages indicate that some of the actions/events being reported could affect the translated data, there has not been a significant impact on normal translator processing.

What is a syslog file and how interested should I be in it?

A syslog is created whenever you run a translation. NX writes messages to the system.log file during the translation. The translator writes translator specific messages to the log file. If the translation is successful the syslog file is automatically deleted. If the translator crashes or ends with a significant error, the syslog file will be left in the UGII_TEMP_DIR directory. We recommend contacting the UGS Global Technical Access Center (UGS Support) to evaluate the file.

How do I use the imported STEP validation information?

You can use the NX function Format→Attribute→Part/Object→List→User Defined to review the imported validation values.

How do I change the way character fonts are mapped during translation?

DXF/DWG provides a mechanism for creating map files that direct the translator to use a specific font when mapping from a given font. Line style and color can also be handled in this manner. See Mapping Specification File Processing for details. Unfortunately this capability is not provided with IGES or STEP.

When I import a STEP file, no data ends up in the NX part file. What happened?

Usually when this happens, the STEP file you received does not have solid data in it. Most likely the data was exported from the other system as surface data. You should import the STEP file again, but on the STEP General Settings dialog box, ensure you check Surfaces (as well as Solids and Product Data) as an object type to import.

How do the translators work with Teamcenter Integration?

If you are running from inside of NX using the File→Export, you will have direct access to the Teamcenter Integration file selection.

If you are importing, you need to do a File→Import to the Current part and then use the normal Save function to store the results in Teamcenter Integration/

You cannot access Teamcenter Integration files from the external user interface.

You can use the command line execution option to export a Teamcenter Integration file. To do this you need to specify a particular input parameter. The example uses STEP 203 but STEP 214 and IGES behave similarly. DXF/DWG does not support exporting Teamcenter Integration files from the command line.

Source your Teamcenter Integration environment,

set
PATH=%UGII_ROOT_DIR%;%PATH%

g:\ugnx40\STEP203UG\step203ug.exe "@DB/000201/A”
D=”g:\ugnx40\STEP203UG\step203ug.def” –pim:yes

The path of step203ug.exe and step203.def will be unique for each environment. The above example translated UGMASTER 000201\a to STEP and saved the file as 000201_a.stp.

Can I edit the Settings file outside of the user interface?

Yes. Setting files are ASCII files and therefore can be updated using your favorite editor. You will need to ensure that you type correctly. This is a good way to specify a different Base Part.

How do I execute the translators from a command line?

The command line interface allows you to translate files without using the interactive menus. You can get to the command line prompt with the following steps:

First ensure that your NX environment variables are properly set up. This includes UGII_BASE_DIR and UGII_ROOT_DIR.

Second your PATH variable should include UGII_ROOT_DIR.

Third, execute the appropriate script to initiate the translator. Note that if no parameters are passed to the script, the user interface will automatically start. Generally, you want to pass the name of the file to be translated. The output file name is the same as the input file name, except with the appropriate file extension.
