Editing a bend uses the same dialog box as for creation.

During Edit, the original placement face will be highlighted. This face will not span the whole of the base body as it originally did because placement of the bend splits the original body into two pieces. Therefore the placement face is also split into two pieces and only the original piece is highlighted.

Also during Edit, the application curve is not projected onto the placement face since in most cases it will not intersect the placement face when projected but rather it will intersect the top face of the bend feature. For this reason, the Stationary Side and Bend Direction vectors are instead created at the midpoint of the original curve selected as the application curve. You cannot change the stationary side vector during an edit.

It is not a recommended practice to change the placement face or application curve of a created bend. This will work in most cases, however in some rare cases the application curve may fail to project onto the new placement face resulting in an error condition. If you desire to change the placement face, only faces belonging to the original placement body are valid for this exchange. Faces that belong to any other bodies are not valid for this operation.

Creating bends

In order to create the Bend geometry, the application curve is projected onto the placement face along the axis of the placement face normal. In order to reduce the chance of error during projection, it is suggested that the application curve be placed onto the placement face before construction unless an application curve of type Bend Axis is desired. In this way, the Bend will be created exactly where you want it to be and there is no chance for placement error during projection.

It is not required that the application curve be created on the placement face, but rather suggested. If the application curve is not on the placement face, it will be projected onto the placement face along an axis coincident with the placement face normal.

Application curve limitations

There are certain limitations to the types of geometry onto which Bends may be applied. A bend cannot be applied to a face such that the bend will generate more than one bend area.

Also, any bend area that completely contains a hole or cutout is invalid. The model should be redesigned such that the bend area is split by a Sheet Metal feature (Hole, Slot, or Cutout) that is applied after the bend.

Cylindrical face limitations

Cylindrical Face Bends require two coaxial cylindrical faces to define the bend region. The difference in radius in these faces represents the material thickness. The angles of the cylinders must be equivalent. As with Application Curve Bends, the bend area cannot contain holes or cutouts and the region cannot be split into two or more faces.

Existing edge limitations

Existing Edge bends can be constructed from a single linear edge between top planar faces. These planar faces must each be from a body with uniform thickness. The sides of the body must be perpendicular to the two planar faces and to the selected edge.

Self–forming features

There are two unforming methods available for Sheet Metal Features. If you have Preferences→Sheet Metal→Use Self–Forming Features enabled, then all newly created Bends will have the ability to unform themselves using the Form/Unform dialog box. When Preferences→Sheet Metal→Use Forming Operations enables, you must unform using the Unbend and Rebend features. Note that you may apply the Unbend/Rebend feature to a self–forming bend however, it will loose its ability to form and unform. You can revert the bend back into a self–forming feature if you delete the Unbend feature and use Model Navigator→Make Self–Forming Feature.
