Normally, an engineer has determined the final shape and outline of the product long before the size and outline of the original flat stock are considered.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) provides the capability to design products having sculptured shapes not previously considered available. The definition of these shapes is contained within the part's database, which the system and the engineer can use to determine the flattened configuration.

A need exists for an automatic function to flatten the formed part to its unformed shape, so that the material can be pre–trimmed and nested before the actual forming operation.

Simple formed parts can be unrolled or unfolded easily using the automated capabilities provided by the Flat Pattern function. However, when the surface to be flattened is highly complex and contains multidirectional curves, simple flattening techniques are no longer effective.
