      </table><br><p class="para_topic">The APV file provides you with ways to customize Routing. You can use standard XML syntax as well as commonly available XML editors and parsers, to modify and verify your APV file.</p>

               <p class="para_td">The Routing <b class="uiTerm">Preferences</b> dialog box lets you change certain default values and settings during an interactive session. The default values and settings for these <b class="uiTerm">Preference</b> options are determined by the APV file.

               <p class="para_td">Routing allows you to introduce custom programming through the <b class="uiTerm">Callback</b> mechanism. Callbacks happen following certain operations in Routing, such as <b class="uiTerm">Place Part</b> and <b class="uiTerm">Assign Stock</b>. You can define a program for any of the callbacks in the APV. Some callbacks are defined and are executed by the default installation.

               <p class="para_td">Plug&ndash;ins</p>

               <p class="para_td">A plug-in is similar to a callback except that a plug-in replaces default functionality rather than being extra processing after a standard Routing operation. For example, the algorithm that calculates the diameter of a wire bundle is provided as a plug-in so that you can replace the calculation with your own algorithm.</p>

               <p class="para_td">Design Rules</p>

               <p class="para_td">Design Rules allow you to provide custom programming to check the work part for violations of design standards.&nbsp;The rules are defined in the APV to be executed concurrently with the user's interactions, at the request of the user and/or in a batch mode. Several Design Rules are active in the default installation.</p>

               <p class="para_td"><b class="uiTerm">Disciplines</b></p>

               <p class="para_td">A discipline tailors Routing for a particular design task. You may have one discipline for piping and one for tubing, or you could have several different disciplines just for piping. The active <b class="uiTerm">Discipline</b> determines many things, but most importantly it determines the parts available for use and a set of <b class="uiTerm">Specifications</b>. You may define as many <b class="uiTerm">Disciplines</b> in the APV as needed.

               <p class="para_td">Under each <b class="uiTerm">Discipline</b>, the APV may define any number of specifications.&nbsp;A <b class="uiTerm">Specification</b> enforces a set of characteristics with certain values are used in a design.&nbsp;You can determine just what characteristics the parts and stock of a design are adhered to.
