In this case, the Create Fabrication tool, which you use to create a routing fabrication component, requires you to enter values for the fabrication characteristics when you create the fabrication. Fabrication Characteristics are defined for each Discipline in the Application View.

You can use port characteristics to specify information about how a part connects to a stock or to another part. You can then use these values as keys to design rules, such as a design rule that assures a port with the characteristic GENDER and a value of FEMALE will not attach to another part with the same characteristic and value.

Sometimes a standard part has several ports with different characteristics. For instance, a reducer will have two ports of different diameters, or one port may define a female connection while the other defines a male connection. For these cases, Qualify Part permits you to add characteristics to individual ports.

If all of the ports on a part have the same characteristic, then the characteristic may be assigned to just the part, rather than assigning the same characteristic with the same value to each port. Perhaps it is required to have a characteristic named MATERIAL in order to utilize a design rule. If all the ports of the part should have the same value for material then it is necessary only to assign a characteristic as a part characteristic, (which you can do through the part table or directly in the part using Qualify Part).
