This section describes the connection list and part library design requirements for modeling round multi–conductor stock (cables, twisted pairs, etc.). Defining multi–conductor stock assures that the diameter of the cable included in the calculations of bundle diameter is correct and that the reported length of the cable does not duplicate for each conductor within the cable.

Imported connection list

In order to define multi–conductor cables, it is necessary that the .hrn file contain cable data. The general format is the same as for typical single conductor wires except for two additional dynamic input boxes, called cable_id and cable_type.

The cable_id dynamic input box of the connection list identifies the cable to which a particular wire belongs. If the box is blank for a particular wire, then the system assumes that the wire is not part of a cable.

The cable_type dynamic input box instructs the system to retrieve corresponding data, based on the input value, from the cables.ptb file. This is identical to how the gauge input functions, which retrieves values from the wires.ptb file. If a wire is desired for the connection then a value is placed in the gauge dynamic input box and the and cable_type dynamic input box is left blank. If a cable is desired then a value is placed in the cable_type dynamic input box and the gauge dynamic input box is left blank. If several cable types exist, then additional characteristics/values can be specified to identify a specific cable, such as part_number or OD.

For example, the following connection list indicates W1 and W2 as a part of cable0001. Wires W3 and W4 are designated as belonging to cable002. W5 is a single conductor wire (18 gauge).
