Applied characteristics

The Applied Characteristic (charx) is a mechanism whereby you can define a characteristic table-wide. That is, an Applied Characteristic attaches just like the other characteristic (columns) of the .ptb file to the stock or fitting when it is added to the routing assembly, but does not have an actual column of data in the part table file. This is an easy way to assign the same characteristic to all rows, without having to repeat it many times.

You can determine the value of an Applied Characteristic by a template format. The format may contain references to other column values. The values of these columns from the selected row are inserted into the format when the member part is instantiated to derive a unique value for that row.

The Applied Characteristic definition has 3 groups, two of which are required. These are:

NAME – (required) The name of the characteristic that will be assigned to the stock or fitting.

FORMAT – (required) The value of the characteristic that will be assigned (which may or may not reference other columns). The format consists of literal characters.

COLUMNS – (optional) The set of column names whose values should be substituted into the appropriate dynamic input boxes of the FORMAT to determine the actual value of the characteristic.

For example, given this definition for an applied characteristic:

APPLIED
 NAME DESCRIPTION
 FORMAT FEMALE B/H CONNECTOR[9F][] x [F]OD
 COLUMNS OD_OUT THREAD_TYPE OD
END_OF_APPLIED

Any entry from this table will have a characteristic named DESCRIPTION whose value will be FEMALE B/H CONNECTOR[9F]"[] x [F]"OD with the portions of FORMAT between each pair of brackets (the [] characters) being replaced with the values of the OD_OUT, THREAD_TYPE, and OD columns respectively. A possible resulting characteristic value is FEMALE B/H CONNECTOR 3 NPT x 3 OD. This example is used in the generation of the parts list, using this characteristic as the description field attribute.

The number inside the brackets specifies the length of the field and an F character within the brackets indicates that a real value should be formatted as a fraction, e.g., ½. The F designator is only used when formatting the value from a column whose type is REAL, in this case OD_OUT or OD. Without the F the value is presented in decimal form.

COLUMNS in the definition is not required. Omission results in each entry from the table having the exact same value for the applied characteristic, namely the FORMAT string, whatever that might be. This is useful for defining columns for a table are to have the same value.

APPLIED characteristics are optional and there may be more than one APPLIED characteristic for a given table. Just define the appropriate APPLIED .. END_OF_APPLIED blocks within the table.
