Spool identifiers are required to be unique only within a run, and not necessarily unique within the product, or even within the work part. For example, spool S003 may be defined for both run R001 and for R002.

For each Run, automatic spool numbering begins with the first sequence number. or example if Prefix is S, number of digits is 3, Suffix is blank, start value is 10, and increment is 10, the first spool encountered is assigned the number S010, the second S020, and so on. If spool numbering of a different run begins, the first spool number is S010 (unless the settings get changed in the mean time).

Position number generation

You can assign each item of a run or a spool a position number. Because different customers may use different position numbering schemes, the functions to generate position numbers are plug–in programs, so that customers may create their own numbering algorithm.

Position nmbers need not be a simple 1,2,3, counting. They may be assigned using a start value and an interval, to yield a sequence such as 10, 15, 20, 25, etc. They may be numbered using an alphabetic sequence, such as A, B, C, etc. Position numbers may include a prefix and a suffix.

The user interface allows the user to define the parameters of the sequence. When Position Numbering is performed, the system automatically generates the sequence values accordingly.

Position assignments

For spool positions, the default plug–in uses the stock first numbering scheme (Bravo legacy style).

There may be a branch as the system walks along a spool assigning position numbers. Position Numbering continues along the main branch and then goes back to the branch point and continues to number items along that branch until the last spool member is reached.

At a branch point (three or more segments meeting at an RCP or a fitting), the decision must be made as to which of the segments meeting at the branch point is the main branch, where position assignment continues. The system determines the main branch segment to be the one that is geometrically straight with the last segment that was assigned a position. The Next Branch dialog box then displays to allow you to accept that segment as the main branch or select one of the other segments.

Processing proceeds along the main branches until a non-spool member is reached. The system then goes back to assign spool numbers by beginning at each of the branch points that were not determined to be main branches. At each branch, spool numbers continue the sequence of the main branch to which the secondary branch is attached.

In the direction of flow, the first stock is given the Position Numbering Start Value. The second stock, if different from the first, is given the value of the Start Value plus the Increment value. If the second stock is the same as the first, meaning all characteristics are the same and the lengths are equal, the second stock is also given the Start Value. Subsequent pieces of stock, if different than any previous stock, are given the number which is the last used number plus the increment value. This numbering of stock continues to the end of the spool and any branches of the spool.

Once all stock is numbered, the numbering sequence continues by assigning the next number to the first (most upstream) fitting in the spool. The next fitting is assigned the next number, unless it is the same part number as the first fitting, in which case it receives the same position number as the first fitting. The third fitting is assigned the next sequence number, unless it has the same part number as one of the first two where it would receive that fitting's number. At branch points, the main run is assigned position numbers first and then the secondary branches have their members' numbers assigned. This numbering logic proceeds through the spool until all members of the spool (referenced and non–referenced) receive a position number characteristic.

Spool position updates

If an item is inserted into a spool, meaning that each item connecting to the new item has the characteristic SPOOL_ID assigned with the same value, the new item is automatically made a member of that spool.

Manual assignment of position numbers

Run positions and spool positions are assigned to items as the characteristics RUN_POSITION and SPOOL_POSITION, respectively by the plug–in programs activated from the Run Navigator. Position numbers are not automatically assigned when new items are placed into a run or a spool. You may manually assign or modify these characteristics if necessary (for example, a valve is added into a run and complete renumbering would not be desirable). For this reason, using an increment value in the numbering scheme, which allows new assignments to be inserted into a sequence, is recommended.

You may edit the position characteristics through the standard attribute module. Alternatively, you can define these characteristics as Optional Characteristics in the APV file, allowing them to be edited through Routing Edit Characteristics tool.
