Several new features and enhancements are provided in the NX 4.0.2 version of PCB.xchange. This document lists them and provides links to the relevant sections of the online help, where you can find out more.

PCB.modeler Name Changed to PCB.xchange Toolbar

In order to clarify PCB.xchange integration with NX and simplify nomenclature, the icons that appear in the NX interface are now collectively called the PCB.xchange toolbar. The toolbar functionality is identical to the toolset previously called PCB.modeler.

Import and Export ECAD from NX

You can now import and export ECAD models directly from the NX interface, using the PCB.xchange toolbar (formerly called PCB.modeler). Previously, you were required to first read the model in the PCB.xchange application, then write the file using the desired output format. This functionality is still available, and should be used when you need access to the full suite of tools for viewing and managing data.

However, for common tasks, you can now simply click Export ECAD Model or Import ECAD Model on the PCB.xchange toolbar. The dialog that opens provides the same functionality as a Read/Write operation in the PCB.xchange application.

Define Any Assembly Component as a PC Board

You can now set any assembly component as the PC board part, by selecting it from the Board Attributes dialog. This allows you to reuse the board part in different configurations and designs. Previously, only the assembly part could be tagged with Board Attributes. Once the assembly part was defined with Board Attributes, it could not be easily used in other assemblies.

PC Board CS Modification

Board Attributes now allows you to tag the current NX part with the WCS. Previously, PCB.xchange located and oriented the PC board's origin to match the part's absolute CS. You now can change this to the part's WCS. First position the WCS, then click Board Origin CS: to WCS. This allows you to position the board in a larger assembly, using any orientation with respect to the absolute CS.

Face Selection to Define Restriction Areas

Faces are now selectable when defining keep-in areas and keep-out areas. Previously only sketches were selectable. This can save time when existing faces are correctly sized and positioned for the restriction area. This is particularly helpful when defining these areas on flexible printed circuits.

Track Revisions of PCB Assembly

You can now tag the PCB Assembly part with a revision number applicable to PCB.xchange. Use the Assembly Navigator to access Properties for the part, and enter an attribute value in the revision number field. This number does not interact with any other revision control system and must be updated manually.

Validation Report Enhancements

Two new features improve the usability of the Info/Validate PCB Assembly command:

The HTML report now appears in the Web Browser tab of the Resource Bar on the right side of the NX interface, instead of a separate a web browser window. This reduces the screen clutter.

In the validation report, any component associated with an error is listed at the beginning of the report. When you click the listed component the report automatically scrolls to the location of the component, which is highlighted for ease of identification.

Support for Flexible Printed Circuits

PCB.xchange now recognizes and correctly interprets flexible printed circuit (FPC) designs. In order to comply with ECAD standards, you must use the Unbend command to flatten the curved FPC to a single plane before validating or exporting. No other special treatment is necessary.

A rigid tab on the FPC can be identified as such by tagging it as an Other type Keep-in or Keep-out.
