      <p class="para_topic">To efficiently machine a groove only slightly larger than the tool insert width in three plunges:</p>

            <p class="para_item">On the operation dialog, click <b class="uiTerm">Plunge Alternate</b> <img align="bottom" src="graphics/strategies/plunge_alternate.gif" border="0">. With this strategy, the system makes the first plunge in the middle of the groove.
            </p>

                        <p class="para_note_body">For the best results, place two trim planes symmetrically around the groove, as in the previous example.</p>

            <p class="para_item">Click <b class="uiTerm">Cutting</b> and select <b class="uiTerm">Minimum Depth</b>. Enter a value large enough that the plunges to the left and right of the first plunge will no longer be made (in the figure above, minimum depth &gt; A).
            </p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">On the operation dialog box, clear the <b class="uiTerm">Cleanup</b> check box and select the <b class="uiTerm">Additional Profiling</b> check box. Click <b class="uiTerm">Stock</b> then specify a positive <b class="uiTerm">Rough Stock</b> to keep the first plunge from cutting to the bottom of the groove. Specify a smaller <b class="uiTerm">Profile Stock</b> (<b class="uiTerm">Profile Stock</b> can be zero.)
            </p>
            <p class="para_item">The profile pass will cut to the desired stock if the <b class="uiTerm">Autodetection Control</b>&rarr;<b class="uiTerm">Minimum Area</b> and <b class="uiTerm">Profile Stock</b> values are small enough to allow the profiling passes.
            </p>

                        <p class="para_note_body">Profiling is used to make an additional plunge cut on each side of the groove. To cut these profiling passes, the rough and profile stock values must  be less than A in the illustration above. When the profile stock value is equal to A, the resulting groove width equals the insert width, and the software cannot cut the remaining material. Use the following method instead: <a class="links" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="top.openFile('mfgturning/plunge_groove_eq_insert.html');return(false);">Cut grooves equal to the insert width</a>.

            <p class="para_item">Click <b class="uiTerm">Profiling</b> and select <b class="uiTerm">Down Only</b> on the <b class="uiTerm">Profiling Options</b> dialog box. This generates two mores passes in addition to the initial plunge.
            </p>

                  <p class="para_item">On the <b class="uiTerm">Profiling Options</b> dialog box, click <b class="uiTerm">Down Only</b> <img align="bottom" src="graphics/ico_down_only.gif" border="0"></p>

                  <p class="para_item">To suppress short horizontal moves on the first down only pass (right side), select <b class="uiTerm">Stop At</b>, click <b class="uiTerm">Settings</b>, select <b class="uiTerm">Percent</b>, and enter 100.
                  </p>

                  <p class="para_item">To suppress short horizontal moves on the second down only pass (left side), set <b class="uiTerm">Overlap</b> to -200% (any percentage below -100% will do).

            <p class="para_item">On the operation dialog box, click <b class="uiTerm">Engage/Retract</b>. 
            </p>

                  <p class="para_item">On the <b class="uiTerm">Engage/Retract</b> dialog box, click the <b class="uiTerm">Retract</b> tab, and <b class="uiTerm">1st Plunge</b>.
                  </p>
                  <p class="para_item">The tool is completely embedded in the material after the first plunge, so select an engage/retract method that is long enough to move the tool directly away from the material again.</p>

                              <p class="para_note_body">If the software warns you when you generate the tool path that it cannot find an avoidance path from the first plunge to the start of the next pass, click <b class="uiTerm">Axial</b> on the message box. This moves your tool away from the part in an axially parallel motion.
                              </p>

                  <p class="para_item">Click <b class="uiTerm">Profiling</b>. Select any suitable retract method and set the values such that the tool retracts directly from the groove without gouging the walls.

            <p class="para_item">On the operation dialog box, click <b class="uiTerm">Avoidance</b>. Select <b class="uiTerm">Motion to Return Point / Clearance Plane</b> with a suitable <b class="uiTerm">Motion Type</b> (for example: <b class="uiTerm">Automatic</b>) and <b class="uiTerm">Return Point</b> to safely move the tool out of the groove.
            </p>
         </li>
      </ol>
      <p class="para_topic">The previous example also applies to walls with fillets.</p>

      <p class="para_division">To further optimize tool tracking for each cut along the walls:</p>

            <p class="para_item">From the operation dialog, click <b class="uiTerm">Machine</b>.
            </p>

         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Click <b class="uiTerm">Define Tracking</b>.
            </p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Select a different tracking point for each wall.</p>
         </li>
      </ol>
