      <p class="para_topic">The Cut Control section offers various choices to influence the processor's behavior with respect to both roughing and finishing operations.</p>
      <div class="title_division">Safe Distance</div>
      <p class="para_division">This provides for an elongation of rough cuts at their start point if they start at the blank geometry. This can be desirable for certain types of tools (typically V-shaped turning cutters) which could collide with the blank when using the default settings. The distance value you enter represents the distance from the default starting point of the tool nose tangent to the blank as follows:</p>

      <p class="para_division">With this option you can enable or disable undercutting:</p>

      <p class="para_division">When using contour roughing, if the tool meets a gap in the contour, it will retract, move to the next contour, and re-engage. If you want the system to make a continuous cut, use this option. The tool will continue at cut feed rate through the gap. This is used mostly for semi-finishing.</p>

      <p class="para_division">When this is activated, the system does not follow the contour of the left and right shoulders (defined using steep angles in  <a class="links" href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="top.openFile('mfgturning/turn_mp_cont_tps.html');return(false);">contour types</a>). It simply cuts directly to the shoulder contour. This is used for semi-finishing.

      <div class="title_division"> Relief Plunge with Distance to Wall</div>
      <p class="para_division">Especially if grooving tools are used in linear roughing, the capability of generating relief plunges is essential in order to avoid gouging due to tool deflection. Relief Plunge allows you to begin cutting each level with an additional plunge a slight distance from the part boundary. This causes material to be removed adjacent to the boundary and provides a space that can prevent the trailing corner of the tool from gouging the part when performing sideways cuts.</p>

      </table><br><p class="para_division">The first plunge (relief plunge) removes material adjacent to the boundary. The tool then retracts, traverses in the cutting direction a distance of half the tool insert width, and applies the second plunge to remove additional material as illustrated below. The tool then begins the sideways cut at a safe distance from the boundary.</p>

      </table><br><p class="para_division">If the groove is too narrow to allow an offset of half the tool insert width, the second plunge is positioned half way between the sides of the groove or half way between the sides of the region in a multi-region groove.</p>
      <p class="para_division">You can only use relief plunges when using Linear cut methods (Zig and Zig-Zag). The Relief Plunge option is not available for contour roughing or grooving operations. The following figure illustrates how Relief Plunges are applied to each level of a tool path that uses a Linear Zig cut method.</p>

      </table><br><p class="para_division">In the above figure, the system applies a Relief Plunge (1) to the beginning of the first level. The tool then retracts (2), traverses to the right, and applies the second plunge (3). The tool then applies the linear cut (4) for the first level. The tool retracts, traverses to the left (5), and the sequence repeats for the next level.</p>
      <p class="para_division">For Linear Zig-Zag cut methods, the sequence of moves is similar to that of Linear Zig except that the the Relief Plunges (1 and 6) occur at opposite ends of each level as illustrated below.</p>

      <p class="para_division">In addition, the system allows for specification of a Distance to the wall of the groove for the relief plunge. This Distance value defaults to 0 units (inch or mm) which determines the relief plunge to be made against the respective wall, i.e., tangent to it at a certain point. Distance values greater than 0 units will position the relief plunge away from the wall (the closest contact point) by the amount specified. </p>
      <p class="para_division">If Cleanup is active, the system performs any required cleanup work at the wall closest to the relief plunge immediately after the relief plunge has taken place. A second plunge into the material is not required.</p>

                  <p class="para_note_body"> Please note that Cleanup removes excess material at the end of a rough cut whereas Relief Plunge settings can be used to remove material at the beginning of the rough cut. The default settings (i.e. Relief Plunge inactive) ensure that no steps are left at the start of a rough cut.</p>

      <p class="para_division">If you want to use a zig-zag cut pattern exactly resembling that of the legacy lathe module (without a relief plunge), set a negative relief plunge distance (be sure to use the unit and not percent setting). You must also deactivate the cleanup option.</p>
