The Material side options appear as Material Retained, Material Removed, or Side Trimmed depending on the type of boundary you are creating. Each enables you to specify the material side of the boundary. The material side determines the side of the boundary on which material will be removed or retained. For open boundaries, the material side is specified as Left or Right. For closed boundaries, the material side is specified as Inside or Outside. The designated left and right sides of an open boundary are determined by the boundary direction. Material Side cannot be specified for Lathe operations.

For Part, Check, and Drive boundaries, you must specify the side on which the material is retained. For blank boundaries, you must specify the side on which the material is removed.
Part boundaries are often used in various combinations. In the following figure, the main containment boundary is a part boundary that forms a peripheral loop around the part. This boundary is specified as Material Retained Outside to allow the tool to drop down inside the boundary and remove material. The remaining part boundaries within the peripheral loop define cut levels. They are specified as Material Retained Inside to prevent the tool from cutting down inside the boundaries and gouging the part. Part boundaries with Material Retained Inside define steps and island tops.
