Individual

For each of the above, if Cleanup is active and the cut depth value is greater than the thickness of the remaining material to be cut, the system executes a single profile cut using the down only mode if the cleanup parameter is set to Down Only or the Profile All setting for all other cleanup parameters. This profile cut respects any rough stock value that you have set. When performing this single profile cut, the system resorts to the profiling engage and retract methods.

This is valid for both linear and contour roughing. In the case of plunge roughing, the system only applies the above behavior if cleanup is active and the Cutting→Minimum Cut Length parameter is greater than the thickness of the remaining material to be cut. If the Cleanup toggle button is off, all the other conditions required for the system to perform a single profile cut instead of roughing described above may be fulfilled but the system does not cut and the message "No rough cut generated. Activate Cleanup" appears.

Constant

Constant allows you to specify the maximum depth of cut to be made on each roughing pass. The system uses the specified depth value as many times as possible and then cuts the remaining material in one pass.

Variable Maximum

If you choose variable maximum, you can also designate a maximum and minimum cut depth. The system determines the regions, cuts at the specified maximum depth value as many times as possible, and then cuts the remaining material in one pass if it is greater than or equal to the specified minimum depth value within each separate region.

For example, if a region measures .55 inches, minimum is .2 and maximum is .3, then the first pass depth is at .3 inches and the next pass cuts the remaining .25 inches of material.

There are two conditions which cause the system to automatically use the variable average method if you selected variable maximum:

if the system determines that the material remaining after using the maximum would be less than the minimum, or

if the system is unable to make at least one roughing pass using the maximum value.

In these cases, the system uses the variable average method with the input minimum and maximum values for the entire region.

For example, if a region measures .45 inches, minimum is .2 and maximum is .3, the system would not be able to machine the entire region because after it cuts the maximum of .3 inches, the remainder (.15) would be less than the minimum and would not be cut. Therefore, the entire region is cut using the variable average method.

Variable Average

With variable average, you can input a minimum and maximum cut depth. The system calculates the minimum number of passes required based on never cutting more than the specified maximum or less than the specified minimum for each region.

No. of Levels

The No. of Levels strategy yields equal depth of cut by letting you specify the number of levels for the roughing operation. The number of levels can be entered into the No. of Levels edit field which, for this cut depth strategy, replaces the depth edit field.

No. of Passes

The strategy No. of Passes lets you enter the number of equidistant contour roughing passes that you want the system to perform. This number can be entered into the No. of Passes edit field which appears when this strategy is selected.

Individual

If you choose this strategy you can define a series of differing cut depth values by pressing Settings. Each of these is performed as often as the corresponding number of passes in the same row indicates. You can specify up to 10 differing cut depth values. For the remaining cuts you may then specify the number of additional passes, each of which is cut with an equal depth of cut.

Individual Cut Depth

If all material has been removed with respect to the rough stock and cleanup settings before all level cuts specified are carried out (starting from the topmost cut depth entry), those unnecessary cuts remaining in the list are simply ignored by the system.

If linear roughing has completed the number of passes entered in the Individual Cut Depth dialog and the number of additional passes is 0, the system continues to cut at the last Increment (depth of cut) entered until all material is removed. If you want the system to stop cutting at a lower depth simply define an appropriate trim plane for this purpose.

Cut Depth in Ramping

The maximum and minimum cut depth along a ramp lets you control the decline/incline of a ramped rough cut. A ramped cut starts at the maximum or minimum depth of cut, depending on the ramping mode chosen. The depth of cut is then continuously diminished or increased as the cut progresses. This constantly lifts the insert higher out of the material or makes it dive into it, until the minimum or maximum depth of cut is reached. With a ramp out cut, the system measures the maximum depth at the rough cut's start position and the minimum at its end (i.e., where the rough cut passing through full material reaches the part profile again or leaves the material). For a ramp in cut, the reverse is true. A ramped rough cut controlled through maximum and minimum depth is shown below:
