You define the Material Side vector with respect to the first point to be machined. This vector should be one whose general direction points away from the part surface and toward the tool. You would normally specify a Material Side vector if you have specified a Part Surface and a tool axis normal to the Part Surface, but you have not specified a Bottom Surface.

In this case, the Material Side indicator helps the system to ensure that the direction of the tool axis vector is correct, and that the tool feeds in the correct direction into the part.

If you specify a Tool Axis normal to the Part Surface, and you also specify a Bottom Surface, the material to be machined, by definition, lies between the Part Surface and Bottom Surface. A Material Side vector, therefore, is not required.

You define the Material Side vector using one of options from the displayed subset of the Vector Subfunction options. Refer to the Subfunctions chapter of the Gateway Help for a discussion of each of these Vector Subfunction options.
