Avoid allows you to specify Tool Clearance over fixtures or obstacles within the part. You must define a Start Point, End Point and Avoid Distance. Distance represents the distance between the Part Surface and the Tool Tip and must be sufficient to clear obstacles between the Start and End Points.

The Avoid option performs a function similar to the standard cycle RTRCTO parameter. The differences between the two are as follows:

Avoid may be specified regardless of the cycle type (none, simulated or standard). RTRCTO is valid only for standard cycles.

Avoid motion is generated by the Point to Point module so that the tool path contains GOTO/ statements to move the tool up and over obstacles. RTRCTO motion is generated by the postprocessor, and no GOTO/ statements are generated by the system. For this reason, the postprocessed N/C program is likely to be shorter when you use RTRCTO than when you use Avoid.

Avoid motion is associated with pairs of adjacent points; the system generates motions to avoid obstacles between each pair of adjacent points. RTRCTO is defined as part of a cycle parameter set. For each point associated with that parameter set, regardless of the order of points, the system retracts the tool the specified RTRCTO distance.

When you choose Avoid, the system first prompts you to select the start point for the Avoid motion. Next, select the point at which the Avoid motion is to stop (End Point).

After you select the points starting and ending the Avoid motion, the system prompts you for the Avoid Clearance Distance.

Clearance Plane - the system uses the Clearance Plane (as defined in Point to Point Avoidance Geometry) as the plane to retract to in order to avoid obstacles. If a clearance plane is not active, the system displays the message CLEARANCE PLANE INACTIVE. From the Avoid Clearance menu you may either use the Distance option or Back to define a Clearance Plane from the Pt-Pt Params menu.

Distance - you are asked for a clearance distance value from which to avoid obstacles. Enter the desired clearance distance and choose OK, or accept the current value by choosing OK.

Avoid motion is generated as follows:

After performing the Point to Point operation at the start point, the system retracts the tool along the Tool Axis to a point that is the specified Clearance Distance above the start point ("above" meaning along the tool axis).

The system then positions the tool to a point that is the specified Clearance Distance
