When you look at a part, you can group the geometry in the part into what you perceive to be a machining feature (a hole feature, or milling feature). When the system looks at a part it sees the geometry- faces, edges, curves, points, etc. When geometric information is grouped together creating a hole feature or milling feature, the system cannot identify it as a feature. It only sees it as a group of geometric information.

In the approach taken in Feature-Based Machining, we are able to teach the system what a hole feature and milling feature is, and how to identify one type of feature from another. We also teach the system the best possible way to machine each type of feature and promote company standards.
