Chip Control allows you to specify a method for clearing or breaking chips as you are grooving. Chip Control is only available for plunge cutting. By default the system generates each single plunge cut as one non-interrupted cutting motion from the in-process workpiece boundary to the finished part surface. If you activate the Chip Control toggle and press the Settings button, you bring up the Chip Control dialog which enables you to specify how to interrupt a plunge cut.

constant if you would like the distance the tool moves forward in each move to be the same for each grooving cut. If the depth is not evenly divisible by the amount you enter here, the system simply calculates the remainder and cuts to the correct depth.

If the sum of the increments is less than the total grooving depth, the system repeats the last non-zero increment value until the depth is reached. If the sum of the increments exceeds the total depth, the system ignores the excess increments.

For the break methods, specify the amount by which the tool retracts after each cut using the Departure Distance.

For the clear methods, you can specify a safe distance at which the tool should stop in front of the material to be cut using the Safe Distance field. The grooving tool will cut to the specified increment, retract beyond the start point to the distance set in the minimum clearance field (set in Cutting → Minimum Clearance from Diameters) and return to a position which is the safe distance away from the material before cutting again.

For both methods, you can specify how long the tool pauses at cut depth before beginning the cut using the dwell option (Cutting → Dwell).
