The Method options let you define how the tool moves from an engage point (determined by the engage method you choose) to the initial cut position. You may set Method to one of the following:

Vector Only specifies that the Engage move is to be measured from a specified plane, along a specified unit vector to the initial cutting position. The vector sub-function dialog appears, followed by the plane sub-function dialog.

Vector,Plane specifies that the engage move is to be along the specified vector from the engage plane to the part surface. This causes both the Specify Vector and the Specify Plane subfunction dialogs to appear.

Angle, Angle, Plane has the following interpretation in Sequential Mill: Two angles determine the direction of an engage vector. The tail of the vector pointing in the direction of the first cut rotates away from the Drive geometry by Angle 1 (if positive) in the plane tangent to the Part geometry at the startup position. The tail of the resulting vector rotates away from the Part geometry by Angle 2 (if positive) in a plane normal to the tangent plane.

Engage Angle Measurement

After you choose Angle, Angle, Plane, the Plane subfunction dialog is displayed. Use an option from the Plane subfunction dialog to establish the length of the engage vector, which is measured from the engage plane to the initial cutting position in the direction determined by the above angles. The Vector subfunction then appears so you can specify a unit vector pointing in the general direction of the next cut. You then set the values for Angle 1 and Angle 2.

Angle, Angle, Distance

Angle, Angle, Distance allows you to specify a move in terms of two angles and a distance. The angles determine the direction of the engage motion, and the distance value determines the length.

To establish Angle 1, visualize a coordinate system (CSYS) located at the origin (start) of the boundary, with its X-Y plane parallel to the part plane and the X-axis aligned with the cut direction of the first member. A positive Angle 1 value would then define a counterclockwise rotation measured relative to the direction of the first cut.

Angle 2 is visualized by realigning the CSYS used for Angle 1. First, realign the X-axis to the Angle 1 vector (direction), then rotate 90 degrees about the X-axis, the Y-axis toward the Z-axis. The CSYS is now oriented with its X-Y plane normal to the part plane and in a plane containing the Angle 1 vector. A positive value for Angle 2 would then define a counterclockwise rotation measurement. i.e., If an engage direction for Angle 2 is downward, then a negative value would be entered.

Distance is the length of the engage motion. A positive value is measured from the first point to be machined in the direction established by angles 1 and 2. A negative value is measured in the opposite direction that is established by angles 1 and 2.

When you generate the tool path, the tool moves the specified distance in the direction established by angles 1 and 2 to the first point to be machined.

In Planar Milling, if the first segment of the boundary "disappears" from the tool path (see the previous discussion for Angle, Angle, Plane), the specified angle and distance may produce an undesirable engage move and you must then respecify the engage data.

Tool Axis specifies that the engage move is along the tool axis. Key in a value to specify the distance of the move.

From a Point allows you to specify a point using the Point Subfunction to begin the engage move.

Clearance Move

Clearance Move toggles between None, Clearance Plane, and Min Clearance. It allows you to create an additional tool movement approaching the start point or the engage point. The direction of the movement is either normal to the clearance plane or along the tool axis.

None indicates that there is no clearance move.

Clearance Plane causes the tool to move from the clearance plane to either the start point or the engage point along a vector normal to the clearance plane.

Min Clearance causes the tool to move to either the start point or the engage point along the tool axis. This distance is defined by the Minimum Clearance value specified in the Sequential Mill Dialog Box.

A clearance move can also be applied to a retract. When retracting, the tool movement begins at the retract point and travels normal to the clearance plane, or along the tool axis using the distance defined by the Minimum Clearance value specified in the Sequential Mill Dialog Box.
