Stepover is the amount by which a tool moves between plunges. The unit of stepover may be expressed either as a distance or a percentage of tool width value. The percentage value may be input as a decimal fraction or a whole number. That is, 50% may be input as .5 or 50. Specify stepover using one of the following options:

Constant - This allows you to specify one step value which will be applied repeatedly until there is less than that amount remaining. This last amount will then be removed in one plunge.

Variable Ave. - The system calculates the minimum number of plunges required based on never cutting more than the specified maximum step for each region.

Plunge Roughing and Cutting->Minimum Length Parameter

In plunge roughing, the minimum length parameter represents an option to suppress plunge cuts shorter than the specified minimum length value. This implies that no plunge cutting takes place in the case where the minimum length value is greater than any plunge cut that could be made to machine the groove. Please, note that when a first plunge position has explicitly been defined or when the cutting strategy Plunge Alternate has been chosen, the first plunge cut internally created by the system - as an exception - is not checked for "Minimum Length" and is therefore always generated.

Especially for single plunge cut grooves, the system can suppress subsequent plunges at a small stepover distance from the First Plunge position. To achieve this, use the Minimum Depth option (under Machining Parameters → Cutting) in order to suppress plunges at a stepover too close to the preceeding plunge. This will, for example, allow for single plunge cutting of grooves that are not wider than three times the tool width (minus tool radii). With a reasonably defined first plunge position using the Plunge Alternate option (this option automatically positions first plunge in the middle of the groove), Minimum Depth set to a suitable value smaller than stepover and Additional Profiling Active (Down Only, Stop At Point set to one shoulder of the groove, negative overlap specified accordingly, overlap value < 100%), the system machines such groove features in basically three motions, the first plunge, a downward pass along one of the shoulders to the Stop At point (without side cutting motion on the groove's bottom), and a final downward pass along the opposite shoulder (again without side cutting motion on the groove's bottom). The sequence of which shoulder is profiled first in this 3 step procedure depends on the Step Angle value, and this direction should be considered when choosing the Stop At point. Also notice, that the rough and profiling stock values should all be set to zero and the Override AutoDetection Option be active in case the groove's width is greater than or equal two times the tool width (minus radii).
