      <p class="para_topic">The Engage and Retract options are used to establish the direction and distance that the tool moves into or out of cutting movements within the tool path. The direction of tool motion may be specified in terms of vectors or angles.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">This section describes only those Engage and Retract options common to multiple machining modules. For those options unique to specific processors such as Automatic for Planar and Cavity Mill, refer to the chapter describing that particular module.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">This section does not discuss Lathe Engage or Retract. Refer to the Lathe documentation.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">Surface Contouring does not use the following Engage and Retract options. To set up engage and retract for Surface Contouring see Noncutting Moves.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">The following are methods of specifying the tool engage and retract moves.</p>

      </table><br><p class="para_topic">The Engage/Retract move is specified in combination with an Engage/Retract plane (and a clearance plane, if active). The Engage/Retract plane may be defined as a plane or implied by defining a distance from the part surface.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">Specifying an Engage move results in the following series of events (after a From Point move, if active):</p>
      <ul>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">A Rapid move to the Clearance Plane, if active,</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">A Rapid move to the Start Point, if active,</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">A Rapid or Approach move (if a Start Point is active) to the engage start point,</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">An Engage move (at an engage feed rate) to the part surface.</p>
         </li>
      </ul>
      <p class="para_topic">Specifying a Retract move results in the following series of events:</p>
      <ul>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">A retract motion (at a retract feed rate) from the workpiece to the retract plane,</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">A rapid motion from the retract plane to the clearance plane, if active.</p>
         </li>
      </ul>

                  <p class="para_warning_body">  CAUTION: If the part surface is defined as being below the workpiece surface (as in Follow Periphery operations), the tool should be specified to Engage or Retract in a direction and at a distance sufficient to prevent gouging the workpiece.</p>
