Feed Rates allows you to specify Feed Rate values for selected Motion Types or to use the RAPID feedrate for non-cutting moves. Because some machines allow these parameters to be controlled directly by the NC program and others do not, three Feed Rate Types are available to choose from; No Direct Control, Non Cutting Control, and Full Feed Rates. You must select the appropriate Feed Rate Type for the WireEDM machine used, and then specify the Feed Rate value and Material Condition for each available Motion Type.

Feed Rate Type

The Feed Rate Type you select is determined by the type of WireEDM machine that will be used to cut the part. Some machines have feed rate control capability and others do not. Each Feed Rate Type is described below.

No Direct Control

No Direct Control does not allow you to specify Feed Rate values or Material Conditions. The Feed Rate value fields and Material Condition buttons are greyed out as illustrated below for each Motion Type.

No Direct Control is used by WireEDM machines that control Feed Rates via the machine power setting. The system does not output any Feed Rate control command to the tool path (neither FEDRAT/ nor RAPID). No Direct Control is the default feed rate type.

Non Cutting Control

Non Cutting Control causes the system to output a RAPID post command for the non-cutting moves. It allows you to specify only the Material Condition (Inside or Outside). The Feed Rate value fields are greyed out for each Motion Type as illustrated below.

Non Cutting Control is used by WireEDM machines (such as AGIE) that need a faster speed for non-cutting moves. These machines use a RAPID post command for non-cutting moves and allow cutting moves to be controlled indirectly by the power setting. Non Cutting Control does not allow you to interactively specify Feed Rate values, therefore no FEDRAT/ post command is output.

Full Feed Rates

Full Feed Rates allows you to specify the Feed Rate and Material Condition for each cutting and non-cutting Motion Type.

Full Feed Rates is used by machines having full feed rate control capability. A non-zero, positive Feed Rate value will cause a FEDRAT/ statement to be output.

Motion Types and their associated Feed Rates and Material Conditions are described below.

Output Unit

Output Unit causes the system to print the unit next to each FEDRAT/ command. When this option is ON, system prints ipm for English parts and mmpm for metric parts as shown below.

FEDRAT/10.0000 ipm FEDRAT/10.0000 mmpm

Motion Types

Once you have selected the appropriate Feed Rate Type (Non Cutting Control or Full Feed Rate), you may define parameters for the available Motion Types.

Motion Types are cutting and non-cutting moves that occur between the specified Move Control Points. Each Motion Type has an associated Feed Rate and Material Condition. The following figure illustrates the sequence of Motion Types and their associated Move Control Points.

Motion Types

The two Material Conditions, Inside and Outside, refer to the positional relationship of the wire guide holders to the material being cut. You may specify the Material Condition for the Rapid, Approach, Lead Out, and Departure Motion Types. The Material Condition for the Lead In and Cut Motion Types is always Inside and it cannot be changed. If there is material between the wire guide holders (wire loaded or not loaded), the Material Condition is Inside. If there is no material between the wire guide holders (wire loaded or not loaded), the Material Condition is Outside as illustrated below.

Inside and Outside Material Conditions

A cutting move occurs when the wire is within the material. A non-cutting move occurs when the wire is outside the material (i.e. the Material Condition is Outside or the wire is not loaded).

The system automatically programs the Load and Cut Wire commands. It outputs LOAD/WIRE at the thread point and outputs UNLOAD/WIRE after the Lead Out move. However, you may specify that the system output the Load Wire command prior to the thread point or keep the wire loaded beyond the Lead Out point.

The Startup/End button in the Machining Parameters section of the WireEDM dialog box allows you access the Wire Status Control options which determine whether or not the wire extends between the holders for specific Motion Types.

For a specified Motion Type, the Wire Status Control and Material Condition determine whether the move is cutting or non-cutting. For the Full Feed Rate Control, these conditions are used to allow the system to determine the appropriate Feed Rate when the Feed Rate value is zero.

The behavior of each Motion Type when used with Full Feed Rates and Non Cutting Control is described below.

Rapid

Rapid is the move to the Thread Point and the move to the Go Home Point.
