      <p class="para_topic">The tool position determines how the tool will position when it approaches the boundary member. Boundary members may be assigned one of three tool positions: On, Tanto, or Contact.</p>

      <p class="para_topic">The difference between these three positions is most apparent on steep surfaces as illustrated below.</p>

      <p class="para_topic">In an ON position, the center point of the tool aligns with the boundary along the tool axis or projection vector (for variable axis operations). In a Tanto position, the side of the tool aligns with the boundary. In a Contact position, the tool contacts the boundary.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">The Contact tool position is available only in Fixed and Variable Axis Surface Contouring operations. On and Tanto may be used in combination as illustrated below, but Contact may not be used in combination with the others. If you wish to use Contact for any one member, the entire boundary must use Contact.</p>

      <p class="para_topic">In Cavity Milling, only the Tanto tool position is available. On and Contact tool positions are not available. When using a Tanto boundary to define blank geometry, the tool cuts beyond the boundary on open sides of the region as illustrated below. This behavior allows the tool to completely remove blank material along the open sides.</p>

      <p class="para_topic">The boundary direction establishes the forward orientation of the boundary. Knowing the direction is necessary in determining the left and right sides of an open boundary. The tool position indicators graphically display the forward direction of the boundary as illustrated below.</p>

      <p class="para_topic">The forward direction is determined automatically by the system when creating a boundary from a selected face, or manually by the sequence of selection when creating a boundary from curves, edges, or points. Once the boundary direction has been established, it cannot be edited or reversed.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">When looking along the boundary in the forward direction, the left side of the boundary is to your left and the right side of the boundary is to your right as illustrated below.</p>

      <p class="para_topic">Once the left and right sides have been established, you can specify the material side of an open boundary. The boundary direction is not relevant when specifying the material side as Inside or Outside for closed boundaries.</p>
