Trim points give you enhanced capabilities to specify where a cut region starts and ends with respect to the overall chained part boundary. A maximum of 2 trim points can be selected. The next figure illustrates how trim points can be used to focus the cutting on exactly the feature of interest:

Trim Points (Red) Defined at Start (Diameter on the Right) and End (Face on the Left) of Cut Region (Cutting from Right to Left)

There are two typical situations for the choice of trim points:

Case 1 (the more common case): You select two trim points. The system's cut region detection mechanism identifies the portion of the boundary that lies in between these trim points for further processing, taking into consideration the machining side determined through tool orientation and Level/Step/Cut Angle definition. The system ignores the remaining portions of the part boundary. If both trim points coincide, the resulting cut region is empty.

Case 2 (less common): You select only 1 trim point and no other containment trim plane. The system considers that portion of the part boundary for further processing which leads towards the trim point and thus is "terminated" by the point. In this context the wording "leading towards" means that the operation's tool orientation and Level/Step/Cut Angle definition determine the direction in which a potential single trim point is approached by the roughing or finishing operation. It can be inferred from the orientation of the arrow in the main dialog's new Level/Step/Cut Angle Indicator .

If you select a trim point that does not lie on the part boundary, the system will compensate for the inaccuracy in trim point input data. It calculates a point on the part boundary that is the shortest distance from the original trim point, the so-called "corrected" trim point. The trimming procedure is then applied to the "corrected" trim point.

Where you set trim points affects what material is recognized for cutting. In the following case, material has been left over from a previous operation. If you do not set a trim point, only a small portion of this material (that above the red line) will be recognized using the chosen tool:

Rest Material Lies below Cutting Line and Is Not Recognized

If you set a trim point along the boundary, but not close enough to the rest material, the system only recognizes some of the material for cutting. It leaves a portion of the material that it could not reach at the bottom of the groove :

A Portion of the Rest Material Is Still Not Recognized for Cutting

To cause the system to recognize all of the rest material for cutting, you must set a trim point as close to the material as possible. In the following figure, the trim point is set at the bottom of the groove. The system recognizes all the material for cutting and leaves a smooth surface at the bottom of the groove.
