Constant allows you to specify a single increment value. You may wish to use this method when specifying a relatively few roughing passes since tool pressure rapidly increases with each pass. The tool moves the input distance as it cuts along the thread angle until it reaches the Roughing Thread Depth.

Variable

If the sum of the increments does not equal the Roughing Thread Depth, the system repeats the last non-zero increment value until the appropriate depth is reached. If the sum of the increments exceeds the Roughing Thread Depth, the system ignores the excess increments.

Percentage

Percentage is particularly useful in roughing threads because it resembles the finishing technique (even allowing you to bypass that option and using the Chase option instead) and is easily modified to accommodate different materials, thread pitch, RPM changes, etc.

This method allows you to specify the increment depth of each pass as a percentage of the total roughing depth that remains at the time of the pass. This causes step distances to decrease as the tool moves deeper into the thread.

As the tool approaches the Roughing Thread Depth, the increment depth can become very small. Therefore, to control the increments, you must enter a Minimum increment value (in the units of the NX part) so that the system can reach the Roughing Thread Depth. When the percentage calculation result is less than the Minimum value, the system uses the Minimum value on each remaining pass until the tool reaches the Roughing Thread Depth.

For example, if the Roughing Thread Depth is .5 inches and you enter:

the depth of cut on the first pass is 10% of .5 or .05 inches. The next cut is 10% of the remaining depth of .45 or .045 inches and so on until the percentage calculation yields a result less than the input Minimum value (.010 inches). The system then cuts at the .010 inches increment on each pass until it reaches the Roughing Thread Depth.

You can also specify a Maximum increment value so that the tool does not feed too far into the thread during the initial threading passes.
