Devices can be a permanent part of the machine, or you can retrieve them from the device library in the CAM session, depending on the part that you are machining. You define the machine devices and device holders in the Machine Tool Builder by classifying a kinematics component as _DEVICE or _DEVICE_HOLDER.

Each device and device holder component appears as a group node in the Machine Tool View of the Operation Navigator. A common example of a device is a tool carrier such as a turret or tool head, and typical device holders are the tool pockets on a tool carrier. When you assign tools to a specific device holder, you are automatically assigning them to a specific channel. Usually a device holder does not contain any geometry objects, but it should contain the following data:

The possible holder systems that fit into this holder.

The mounting junction that the CAM session uses to mount the tools to the pocket.

The name of the junction is arbitrary and you can only define one junction per holder. This junction is used for device transformation when it is mated to the holder. Note that many devices are pre-mounted to the machine such as turrets and tool heads. You can already mount these to the machine model when creating it in the Machine Tool Builder. Others devices depend on the part to be machined. Typical examples of these include chucks and jaws. You can consider tools as a specific device type in this context. The system supports a tool and a device library where you can retrieve the necessary objects during the CAM session. If the corresponding holders are defined in the Machine Tool Builder and if the device (tool) object in the library also contains a mounting junction and holder type, then it is automatically mounted correctly.
