Face Milling has been designed primarily for facing off planar faces. However, Face Milling may still be used for pocketing within certain limitations. Those limitations are that the walls of the pocket are planar and perpendicular to the floor of the pocket (see number one in the figure below). In cases where the pocket walls have a taper (Example two in the figure below) or there are blends between the walls and floor of the pocket ( Example three in the figure below), Face Milling may still be used, but there may be some material that is left uncut. To minimize the uncut material, turn Prevent Undercutting off.

The figure above shows three different situations where the floor meets the wall. In cases two and three, the amount of material left between the floor and walls depends upon the Prevent Undercutting option used.

When Prevent Undercutting is turned on, the tool, including the corner radius, is treated as a solid cylinder. The part body is sliced at the cutting levels and the resulting part sections are offset by the tool cylinder radius. These part outlines are then subtracted from the face outlines to determine the area to cut. This technique is conservative and may leave some material uncut between the floor and walls of the pocket.

When Prevent Undercutting is turned off, the contact point between the tool and wall is determined more exactly, minimizing the amount of uncut material between the floor and wall.
