Chip Removal allows you to specify a method for clearing or breaking chips as you drill. There are two options under Chip Removal: Method and Increment Type.

Method toggles between BREAK CHIP, PECK DRILL, and NONE.

Individual chip removal methods are discussed below in the following order:

Break Chip

Break Chip allows you to specify a cyclic drilling sequence in which the tool is periodically retracted a short distance at the feed rate you specify to break the chip.

The following terms are used in both CONSTANT and VARIABLE increment types in Break Chip.

Increment - refers to the distance the drill moves forward with each move.

Distance - refers to the distance the drill moves backward, after reaching the specified Increment, in order to break the chip.

Departure Feed (Departure Feed Rate) - represents the feed rate for the retract Distance move.

If the status value of Increment Type is CONSTANT, enter the desired increment, retract distance and departure feed rate values. If the entered increment is not equally divisible into the specified depth, the system uses the increment distance as many times as it can without drilling beyond the specified depth. The system then calculates the remaining distance and drills to the desired depth.

For example, if depth is one inch and you enter a constant increment of .35, the system moves the tool .35 inches twice, for a total of .70 inches. (If at this point the system uses the .35 increment distance again, the hole would be deeper than the desired one inch depth by .05 inches.) The system then calculates and drills the final .30 inches on the third move for a total of one inch.

If the entered increment value is greater than the specified depth value, the system ignores the increment value and drills to the specified depth value.

Break Chip Drill Machining Tool Path

If you set the status value of Increment Type to VARIABLE, you can specify a set of variable increments and the number of times each is to be repeated.

Enter the desired retract distance and departure feed rate. Then enter the increment distances (forward tool moves) and the times you wish them repeated. The system uses the input increment values and number of moves until the tool reaches the specified drilling depth.

If the sum of the increments does not equal the total depth, the system repeats the last non-zero increment value until the depth is reached. If the sum of the increments exceeds the total depth, the system ignores the excess increments.

For example, if the depth is two inches and you enter:

Peck Drill

Peck Drill allows you to specify a cyclic drilling sequence in which the tool is periodically withdrawn from the hole at the departure feed rate to clear off the chips.

Increment refers to the distance the drill moves forward with each move.

Distance allows you to specify the safe distance from the previous infeed depth to which the tool can move before infeeding for the next cut increment.

Departure Feed (Departure feed rate) represents the feed rate for the moves out of the hole to clear off the chips.

If the status value of Increment Type is CONSTANT, the drill tool cuts to the specified increment distance, retracts at the departure feed rate out of the drilled hole to the minimum clearance distance from the Start Point, and returns at the rapid feed rate to the specified distance from the previous increment distance. This cycle is repeated until the tool reaches the specified drilling depth.
