Ramp Up Angle and Ramp Down Angle allow you to specify the up and down angular motion limits of the tool. The angles are measured from the plane perpendicular to the Tool Axis. These options are available for all Drive Methods, but only for Fixed Axis operations.

Apply at Stepover is a cut parameter specific to Contour Milling.

Apply at Stepover works in conjunction with the Ramp Up and Ramp Down Angle options. It is an on/off toggle that enables you to apply the specified ramp angles to the Stepovers.

Apply at Stepover

The figure above illustrates how Apply at Stepover effects a Zig-Zag tool path. The Ramp Down Angle is set to 45 degrees and the Ramp Up Angle is set to 90 degrees. When Apply at Stepover is turned on, these values apply to the Stepovers as well as the Zig-Zag passes. The downward ramping passes and Stepovers are both limited by an angular range of 0 to 45 degrees.

Optimize Path

Optimize Path is a cut parameter specific to Contour Milling.

This option causes the system to optimize the Tool Path when using Ramp Up and Ramp Down Angles with Zig or Zig-Zag. Optimization means that the Tool Path is calculated in such a way that the tool remains in contact with the part as much as possible and minimizes Non-Cutting moves between passes. This feature is available only when the Ramp Up angle is 90 degrees and the Ramp Down angle is 0 to 10 degrees, or when the Ramp Up angle is 0 to 10 degrees and the Ramp Down angle is 90 degrees.

In a Zig that only allows upward ramping, for example, the system optimizes the Tool Path by creating the Tool Path in two stages. In the first stage, the system steps through all climb up passes in the Zig direction. In the second stage, the system steps through all climb up passes in the opposite Zig direction.

Zig Optimization for Ramp Up Only

The figure above illustrates how the system optimizes a Zig using a Ramp Down Angle of 0 to 10 degrees and a Ramp Up Angle of 90 degrees. The Ramp Down Angle of zero degrees prevents the tool from ever cutting in a downward direction. The system therefore generates all upward cuts on one side of the part in the first stage, traverses to the opposite side of the part and then generates all upward cuts on the other side of the part in the second stage. Notice that the Stepover direction is reversed in the second stage to further optimize the Tool Path.

Extend to Boundary

Extend to Boundary is a cut parameter specific to Contour Milling.

Extend to Boundary extends the ends of the cutting passes to the Part boundary when creating "up only" or "down only" cuts. When toggled OFF for "up only" (ex: Ramp Down Angle=0) cuts, each pass stops cutting at the top of the part (see "A" below). When toggled ON for "up only" cuts, each pass extends in the direction of the cut to the boundary of the part (see "B" below).

When toggled OFF for "down only" (ex: Ramp Up Angle=0) cuts, each pass begins at the top of the part (see "C" below). When toggled ON for "down only" cuts, each pass extends to the boundary at the beginning of each cut (see "D" below).
