Constant

Constant allows you to specify the maximum depth of cut to be made on each roughing pass. The system uses the specified Depth value as many times as possible and then cuts the remaining material in one pass.

Variable Maximum

If you choose Variable Maximum, the system determines the regions, cuts at the specified Maximum depth value as many times as possible, and then cuts the remaining material in one pass if it is greater than or equal to the specified Minimum depth value within each separate region.

For example, if a region measures .55 inches, minimum is .2 and maximum is .3, then the first pass depth is at .3 inches and the next pass cuts the remaining .25 inches of material.

There are two conditions which cause the system to automatically use the Variable Average method if you selected Variable Maximum:

if the system determines that the material remaining after using the maximum would be less than the minimum, or

if the system is unable to make at least one Roughing pass using the maximum value.

In these cases, the system uses the Variable Average method with the input minimum and maximum values for the entire region.

For example, if a region measures .45 inches, minimum is .2 and maximum is .3, the system would not be able to machine the entire region because after it cuts the maximum of .3 inches, the remainder (.15) would be less than the minimum and would not be cut. Therefore, the entire region is cut using the Variable Average method.

Variable Average

With Variable Average, the system calculates the minimum number of passes required based on never cutting more than the specified Maximum or less than the specified Minimum for each region.

You may encounter the following are error messages during the specification of variable depth:

Cannot Rough The Part Trying To Rough Less Than The Minimum

The error message above appears if the system would have cut less than the minimum value. You should decrease the minimum step size value.

Cannot Rough Part Adjust Max/Min Values

It is not mathematically possible to Rough a region with the given max/min values. Therefore, increase the max/min range.

Processor Error Bad Intersection Adjust Step Size

The system has detected an internal error which, if execution were to continue, would result in an incorrect tool path. Adjust the step sizes and try again. If the error message persists, use constant stepping.
