In Process Calculations and Uncut Material

2D Dynamic Material Removal is intended to supply a more complete animation of the tool path by including material removal functions. It provides a pixel based view where display of the blank and the dynamic removal of the material is represented. The additional capability to create geometry that represents the uncut material provides great process productivity with respect to In Process Calculations.

To manufacture any part requires several operations. Typically, the uncut material from the previous operation defines the shape of the geometry at the subsequent operation. NX provides help in the selection of these subsequent geometries. It does this by calculating the uncut material from the previous operation. This process is referred to as In Process Workpiece (IPW) because it keeps track of the workpiece as it is in process. The uncut material after each operation is an IPW.

Dynamic Material Removal can create an IPW to be used as a starting point for visualizing the next operation or as an easy method to select a blank for a subsequent operation.

2D Dynamic Mode IPW's

In 2D Dynamic mode you can generate two types of In-Process-Workpieces (IPWs): a Visualize IPW and a Faceted Body IPW. Both of these IPWs are saved with the part. A Visualize IPW is used for subsequent visualization, and can be used as an automatic blank for subsequent Cavity Milling operations. If you want a body that can be manually selected as a blank, or a body that can be used in other parts of the system, you can also create a Faceted Body IPW.

2D Dynamic Material Removal uses the previous state of the material or a blank as a starting shape. When determining the previous state of the material for the first operation, Visualize searches in the following order:

Blank defined in the operation.

Visualize IPW from previous operation.

Blank defined in a parent geometry group.

If none of these are found the system helps you to quickly create one. Depending on the part geometry the system may provide you with two options: Offset from Part, or Auto Block. Offset from Part applies a thickness to the entire part, and is commonly used for castings. Auto Block puts a minimum box around the part, oriented with the MCS, and is commonly used when starting with a rectangular blank of raw material. You can control the size of this block by either using your mouse to drag the handles on the part or by entering a value in the value field.

When determining the previous state of the material for all operations after the first operation, Visualize searches in the following way:

When multiple operations are being visualized, the system maintains the visualize IPW from one operation to the next. This provides a realistic simulation of the program.

If the system encounters an operation that uses a different geometry blank and this blank doesn't overlap with the current visualize IPW, then the system adds that new blank to the visualize IPW. This can occur if the system machines multiple parts from multiple blanks in one setup. The system ignores the new blank if it overlaps with the current visualize IPW, and the visualize continues based on the visualize IPW.

If they system encounters an operation that contains a faceted body as its geometry blank, the faceted body is ignored, and the visualization continues based on the visualize IPW. This is the case if you manually create faceted bodies to represent the IPW, as was the practice prior to version NX.
