This option allows you to move the tool path while allowing it to remain associated with the operation. This option is useful when you want to copy a tool path to other areas of the part or you need to adjust the original tool path.

When you transform an operation, you have the option to Move, Copy, or make an Instance of that operation. When you move an operation, you simply change the location or orientation. When you copy an operation, you create a new operation, with its own set of parameters and tool paths. When you create an instance of an operation, you also create a new operation, but it is directly related to the original operation.

Because an instance of a tool path maintains a link with the original operation, it has advantages over copies of a tool path. This allows you to edit a single operation and have all of the related tool paths automatically updated. This saves you time creating and editing the corresponding tool paths.

You can save time by creating fewer operations from scratch. For example, if you were to mill out four pockets that have the same shape, you could create a single operation for the first pocket and then create three more instances of the operation for the other pockets. If the corresponding tool paths need to be updated, you only have to edit one of the instances and all other instances update automatically.

The Reference Coordinate System (RCS) is used to relocate non-modeled geometric parameters (i.e. tool axis vectors, clearance planes, etc.) when the area being machined has moved from one section of a part to another. This eliminates re-specification of such parameters by allowing the retrieval and mapping of stored parameters.

Non-modeled geometric parameters can be defined using associative (smart) or non-associative (dumb) points, vectors, and planes. Smart objects are created using the Point, Vector, and Plane Constructor Subfunctions. Associative and non-associative parameters behave differently when transforming an operation as illustrated below.
