Computational Method

The method for computing the hole to trim distance is base on the following.

The die(s) the hole and the trim are in.

The punch directions used for each object.

This implies that there are three different methods used for computing the hole to trim distance (D).

The hole piercing and trimming are performed in the same die, and each has the same piercing direction.

For this case, the trim object and the hole center are projected onto the plane of the piercing direction. Next, the distance between the point and trim is then determined, and finally the shank radius is subtracted to get the final value used to determine if a nonconformance exists. If the shank diameter is less than the hole diameter, then the distance between the point and trim object will be used. A negative value for D will be reported by the DFM Advisor if the shank size intersects the trim object. See the Pierce Commonization criteria for details on how the shank diameter is computed.

The hole piercing and trimming are performed in the same die, but each uses a different piercing/trimming direction. The previous case measured the distance in a plane. Since a unique plane does not exist for this case, the three dimensional distance will be used. For this measurement the circle representing the shank is created and will not lie on the sheet if the hole is not pierced on a flat part of the sheet. (Similar to above, if the shank diameter is less than the hole diameter, a circle the diameter of the hole will be created.) The pictures below shows the hole to trim measurement.
