A binder is the peripheral area of a stamping die that clamps the sheet metal into an initial shape (a binder wrap), before the punch forms the metal into the final shape. The shape of the binder wrap is critical to the success of a stamping process. It is generally believed that a binder wrap should assume the general trend of the final die shape while not introducing an excess amount of strain to the metal at that stage. Although not absolutely required, it is preferred that the shape of a binder wrap be developable, a shape that a piece of sheet metal can be formed into without any in-surface distortion.
