The flat length of a flange is the distance from the end of the break radius to the end of the flange.

Purpose

To ensure the flat length is large enough so that standard steel flanges can be used, and the part can be positioned correctly in the die.

Computational Method

For this check sections are cut normal to the flange tangency curve (3-D radial sections). Since the flange tangency curve may be straight, additional sections are added to the flange tangency curve at the locations of the sample points generated where the end of the flange has large deviations. See the picture below.

If a particular section stops in the break radius area, a nonconformance is reported and the location is indicated with an asterisk. For this case the nonconformance will report a negative distance. To arrive at this negative distance, the bend radius length is approximated by considering neighboring sections that have a flat length.

If the flange width is sufficiently large, flat length violations in a few locations does not necessarily mean additional die costs will be incurred.

To pass the flange flat length check the flat length must be greater than Standard Length or greater than Multiple Length times metal thickness.
