Purpose

To determine if two flanges are too close to be manufactured. This check guards against flanges being too close resulting in the potential for weak flanging steels.

Computational Method

The computational method is independent of the two flanges (perimeter to perimeter, cutout to cutout, or cutout to perimeter) involved in the measurement, but not all flanges will be measured with each other. For a flange to flange measurement to be made, the two flanges must be opposite each other. To be considered opposite, there must be at least one location where either of the flanges have a tangency curve that is 90 to the other. This is the same rule that is applied to the Flange to Trim criteria. The difference here is that if either flange has a 90 location, the check is performed. With the Flange to Trim criteria the 90 condition was only applied to the flange. See the picture below.

Flange Opening Distance

For each pair of opposite flanges, the distance between them is the minimum distance between the lower (end of flange) of each flange. If the flanges are flanged in the same direction, the measurement is the "in plane" (normal to flanging direction) distance. If the flanges each have a different flanging direction, then the minimal 3d distance between the ends of the flange is used. See the picture below.

Height

The Flange Opening Distance must be greater than Opening Multiple value(?) x the flange height. The flange height is computed by finding the minimum distance from the end of the flange, to the flange tangency curve. Since a flange may have different heights depending on where it is measured, the largest height from either flange is used to determine if a nonconformance will be reported. The example below shows a flange with different possible heights with the largest being identified.
