This check provides information concerning the springback distance, so one can determine the proper flange profile tolerance. That is, for a 90 wipe flange to not incur additional die costs, its springback amount (profile tolerance) must be considered when determining the design position of a flange.

Computational Method

The springback angle is specified in the customer defaults. This defaults file lets one specify a table of springback angles based on material yield strength. The springback angle check looks up in this table to find the corresponding angle to use.

For this check a die view section is used for the measurement. This is the same section used for measuring the wall angle in the Double Break Flange check. See Flange Double Break check for more details.

If a flange was intended to be designed as a 90 wipe flange, but the design position is incorrect according to the values in the customer defaults, then a nonconformance is reported along with the springback distance. If the customer defaults is changed so the springback angle is 0.0 , than a 90 wipe flange will not generate a nonconformance for this criteria. The following are the steps used for evaluating the section, computing the springback distance, and reporting nonconformances.

The theoretical start point of the flange is determined. See the picture below.

Using geometry right triangle equations, we can compute the springback distance. The springback distance (flange profile tolerance) = Flange Length x sin(springback angle). This is the value reported in the nonconformance dialog. To pass this check, the flange wall angle must be equal to the springback angle obtained from the customer defaults. The springback angles are dependent on material strength, and are set using the value from the Flange Springback Yield customer default.
