      </table><br><p class="para_topic">Most of the tabs in the Weld Assistant customer default's Creation and Custom Weld Point categories (<b class="uiTerm">File</b>&rarr;<b class="uiTerm">Utilities</b>&rarr;<b class="uiTerm">Customer Defaults</b>&rarr;<b class="uiTerm">Weld Assistant</b>&rarr;<b class="uiTerm">Creation</b> or <b class="uiTerm">Custom Weld Points</b>) have a <b class="uiTerm">Characteristics</b> list box. This list box provides attributes that are available when you create or edit a weld.
      </p>
      <p class="para_topic">The <b class="uiTerm">Characteristics</b> list box of the <b class="uiTerm">Customer Defaults</b> dialog box includes the characteristics that appear in the <b class="uiTerm">Available Characteristics</b> list box of the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box. The customer defaults define each characteristic's <b class="uiTerm">Type</b> and assign a <b class="uiTerm">Title</b> and <b class="uiTerm">Value</b> to its attribute.
      </p>
      <p class="para_topic">Characteristic types include none, strings, integers, real numbers, or lists. (The list type provides the only options that are available for that attribute; when you assign the attribute, you must choose an option from the list.)</p>
      <p class="para_topic">Characteristics can be:</p>
      <ul>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">General characteristics, which assign a title and value to the attribute without modifying the weld point's display.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Modifier characteristics, which modify the weld point's display, in addition to assigning a title and value for the attribute.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">Required characteristics, which are assigned to the weld point regardless of whether or not you specify them.</p>
         </li>
      </ul>
      <p class="para_topic">The following sections provide more information about general, modifier, and required characteristics, including sample formats. The fields in each sample format are separated by colons.</p>
      <div class="title_division">General Characteristics</div>

               <p class="para_td">In the sample format, the third field is &ldquo;CONTROL&rdquo;.</p>

               <p class="para_td">Fourth field</p>

               <p class="para_td">Specifies the attribute value which, if the attribute type is anything other than a list, appears in <b class="uiTerm">Value</b> in the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box.
               </p>
               <p class="para_td">If the attribute type is &ldquo;List&rdquo;, this field is the options that are available for this attribute. They appear in the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box in either <b class="uiTerm">Type</b> or in the option menu whose name is identical to the third field (which replaces <b class="uiTerm">Type</b> for some welds).
               </p>
               <p class="para_td">In the sample format, which is a list, the fourth field is &ldquo;up-down, in-out, fore-aft&rdquo;. In this case, the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box has an option menu with those three options from which you can choose.
               </p>

               <p class="para_td">Specifies the default characteristic for a list.</p>
               <p class="para_td">In the sample format, the default option is &ldquo;in-out&rdquo;, but you can change it in the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box to &ldquo;up-down&rdquo; or &ldquo;fore-aft&rdquo; for your weld feature.
               </p>
            </td>

      </table><br><div class="title_division">Modifier Characteristics</div>
      <p class="para_division">The following text is a sample format that controls the symbol displayed for a weld feature:</p><pre class="indent">None:None:None:None:101,102,103</pre><p class="para_division">The first four fields for this symbol are &ldquo;None&rdquo;, and the fifth field has three numbers:</p>
      <ul>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">The first number (&ldquo;101&rdquo; in this example) specifies which symbol appears when 2 sheets are joined.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">The second number (&ldquo;102&rdquo; in this example) specifies which symbol appears when 3 sheets are joined.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">The third number (&ldquo;103&rdquo; in this example) specifies which symbol appears when 4 sheets are joined.</p>
         </li>
      </ul>
      <p class="para_division">If the fifth field contains only one number, the symbol specified by that number appears no matter how many sheets are joined.</p><br><p class="para_division">The following text is an example of a modifier characteristic that modifies the display symbol and color of the weld feature, as well as assigning a title and value to the attribute.</p><pre class="indent">String:Vital:IMPORTANCE:vital:104,105,106:152</pre><table cellspacing="2" width="100%" align="center">

      </table><br><div class="title_division">Required Characteristics</div>
      <p class="para_division">A required characteristic, which has &ldquo;Required&rdquo; as its last field (see the example below), is automatically assigned to a weld feature. The customer defaults set the default value, but you can modify the value in the <b class="uiTerm">Weld Characteristics</b> dialog box when you create or edit a weld feature.
