Pins (called locating pins or pilot pins) are aligned with the pilot holes to fix the location of the strip. The scrap with pilot holes is called the pilot scrap. Pilot Scrap automatically copies a pilot scrap to all stations in the strip layout. If a progressive die does not have a pilot scrap to define the relief (a relief is the clearance created by removing metal beyond the cutting edge of a punch), the pilot pins will penetrate beyond the relief and damage the die plate.
