To assist you with migrating data between spreadsheet applications, NX provides a migration utility.

Platforms

On UNIX and Windows Alpha, you can migrate an Excel spreadsheet to Xess. On Windows Intel, you can migrate spreadsheet data from Xess to Excel and vice versa. On all systems, you don't need to have access to the spreadhseet where the data is stored. You only need access to the spreadsheet to which you are migrating.

Required Software

When migrating from Xess to Excel, you only need Excel. Similarly, migrating spreadsheet data from Excel to Xess requires only Xess (which also means that Exceed must be present).

Before You Begin

Before you begin, make a copy of the part containing the old spreadsheet data. Keep the copy until you verify that the new spreadsheet data is correct.

To migrate spreadsheet data:

Click on File→Utilities→Migrate Spreadsheet Data.

Select the spreadsheet format. NX stores three types of spreadsheets in parts: Modeling, Gateway, and Part Families. If a part does not contain all three types of spreadsheet data, the options for the types that are not present are unavailable. Select a new format for each type of spreadsheet data you want to migrate.

To perform the migration, click on OK. To perform the migration and leave the dialog displayed, click on Apply. Note: You cannot use Undo with spreadsheet migration. The system displays: Spreadsheet migration was [was not] successful. Check the Information window for more information about this migration. When the migration is complete, NX stores the migrated spreadsheet data in the part file, replacing the spreadsheet data in the old format. If you close a part file without saving it, the migrated spreadsheet data will not be saved.

Errors

Error: Migrating without Excel

If you try to migrate Xess data to Excel without Excel installed, the system displays the following message:

[Modeling, Gatway, or Part Families] spreadsheet data in this part is in Excel format. Excel is not available on this computer and is needed to perform the migration. Please migrate this data on a computer with Excel.

Verifying Migrated Data

Because some data does not cleanly migrate from one spreadsheet to another, you should check every spreadsheet that you migrate.

You can manually verify migrated data. To do so, open an appropriate spreadsheet in NX (Gateway, Modeling, or Part Family). Look for Xess/Excel error messages, incorrect numeric values, differences in cells format, etc.

If the migration utility had problems during migration from Xess to Excel, it places an error message in the cell comment associated with the cell with the problem. Error messages start with the word UGERROR. Therefore, to find error messages, search for "UGERROR" in cell comments (Edit→Find menu).

Cleaning Up Migrated Data

No migration is perfect. Migrating data from a spreadsheet application with one set of supported features to an application with another always means losing data for the unsupported features. This will require some manual fix-up.

Xess and Excel Comparison
