Radiosity is a preprocessing step to rendering an image that is used to compute the lighting contribution of indirect light in a room or environment. Indirect lighting is caused by light reflecting off diffuse surfaces like walls and floors. Radiosity calculates physically accurate lighting where each surface can contribute light to other surfaces in the environment.

Radiosity is not actually a rendering method, it is a preprocessor for rendering and is applied along with the High Quality Image photo-realistic rendering method. The basic process for Radiosity is:

Light is initially sent from light sources out to the surfaces in a scene or environment.

The polygon mesh for the scene is refined based on bright areas and those areas along the edges of a shadow.

The Radiosity processor iterates on each surface that has received light and re-transmits the reflected light from that surface to other surfaces in the environment.

This process continues until a specified percentage of the indirect lighting effects have been calculated.

After the indirect light is calculated, then a normal Photorealistic rendering is made for the overall scene.

Radiosity is generally used for interior scenes, like office environments or the interiors of automobiles. Radiosity will not provide any benefit for complex assemblies hanging in space. Radiosity is a compute intensive process that will also consume a considerable amount of disk/swap space. The polygon refinement portion of the calculation will likely produce a very large increase in the number of polygons in the scene and may stress the computing resources of your workstation.
