The intent is to keep these planes located on even increments, or "steps" from a certain location. This forces the planes to "step" away from the trim profile and provide some cutter efficiencies when the casting is made.

Then adjacent base planes are analyzed to determine their spread distance in the trim direction.
If the base planes are at least the distance specified by Step Distance from each other, then they are left in their initial position.
If the base planes are within the distance specified by the Step Distance, then the second base plane is moved to be in line with the first base plane or moved to be the distance specified by Step Distance away from the first.
The following discussion describes this movement.
Assume that the terms above and below are defined by saying something above will be hit first if moving in the trim direction.
If the second adjacent base plane is below the first adjacent base plane it is moved to be in line with the first adjacent base plane.
If the second adjacent base plane is above the first adjacent base plane, and within the Step Delta distance, it is moved to be in line with the first adjacent base plane, otherwise the second base plane is moved to be the distance specified by Step Distance above the first adjacent base plane.

Initially the base location is derived by analyzing the profile and setting the base plane the Minimum Height away from the profile, snapping to the next further Increment value.
