For example, you can use an image of an outdoor scene to get "sky" lighting. Or you can use indoor images for "room" or "photography studio" lighting setups. The images you select from the IBL page are also reflected off of shiny objects in your scene.

The images used for IBL can be either standard low dynamic range formats, such as TIFF or JPEG or they can be high dynamic range formats, such as EXR or HDR. High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI) formats represent more real-world lighting and color intensities than low dynamic range ones. With HDRIs, your reflections will be much deeper and more realistic. For this reason, HDRIs are the preferred choice for IBL.
