      <p class="para_topic">When Translucency is turned on, each shaded object is drawn with the translucency setting specified with Edit&rarr;Object Display. When Translucency is turned OFF, then all objects in Shaded, Face Analysis, or Partially Shaded views appear opaque, regardless of their individual translucency settings. Translucency does not apply to views with other rendering styles.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">Translucency should be turned on only when top-quality images are desired, because on some configurations it can degrade drawing performance and it can produce unexpected colors during editing operations. You can use the Visual option to turn it off or, equivalently, you can use Preferences &rarr; Visualization Performance to turn on Disable Translucency. The two settings are synchronized, so whenever you modify one, the other is correspondingly changed.</p>
      <p class="para_topic">Translucency is a session attribute, so it applies to views in all parts in the session. The attribute setting is determined as follows:</p>
      <ol type="1" start="1">
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">If you previously used the Visualization Preferences dialog box to modify the attribute, then that setting is used. Note that the setting is saved, for each user, from session to session.</p>
         </li>
         <li>
            <p class="para_item">If you have never modified the attribute, then the setting is initialized to the value specified by the UGII_TRANSLUCENCY environment variable, if it is set. The variable can be set to TRUE or FALSE.</p>

            <p class="para_item">If the environment variable is unset, then on UNIX workstations only, the setting is initialized to the value specified by the ugraf***.translucency resource in the ugraf*** resource file, if it is set. The resource can be set to TRUE or FALSE.</p>
            <p class="para_item">Example:</p><pre class="indent">*ugraf***.translucency: TRUE</pre><p class="para_item">This resource is not listed in the default ugraf*** file supplied with NX.</p>

            <p class="para_item">If neither the environment variable nor the resource are set, then the setting is initialized to FALSE.</p>
         </li>
