The Artistic Image option provides non-photorealistic rendering (NPR). In contrast to photorealistic rendering, the aim of NPR is not to use the computer to produce an image that looks as close as possible to a photograph, but, instead, to use the system to produce an image that is more like a pencil sketch, ink drawing, or painting.

In order to produce convincing photorealistic images, a great deal of time must be spent on the modeling of fine detail, the creation and careful application of materials and textures. Instead, a product designer might want to produce imagery of his or her design in which the important message is the shape of the design, rather than the type of materials to be used. He or she may actively want to avoid the feeling that a design is 'finished' that a photorealistic image may convey.

A human artist can produce sketches which can convey these aspects of a scene, using a minimum of lines and perhaps some shading. The 'impression' of what an object will look like can be conveyed without the great amount of detail needed to create a convincing, or pleasing, photorealistic image.

You can use this dialog to communicate different aspects of your designs to different people at different stages of your design process.

On some platforms, it is not possible to successfully save the result of the Artistic Image dialog to a file. However, to save a TIFF version of your Artistic Image result:
