This section provides an overview of printer administration for the NX plotting system. Printer administration involves defining printers and setting printer options using the BPS (Basic Print Solution) approach. BPS is the printing functionality integrated into the NX plotting system. There is an optional extra cost client-server printing functionality called Print Master that you can use instead-of or in combination with the BPS scheme.

Defining Printers

In the BPS approach, you define printers in a printer group, which is a collection of printer definition files that reside in a particular disk directory. Use File -→ Utilities -→ Printer Administration to create a new printer group directory and define printers in the new printer group, or to edit printer definitions in an existing printer group. After defining a printer, you can direct plots to the printer by selecting its name in the NX Print dialog displayed by the File -→ Plot dialog.

When you define a printer, you perform the following steps:

Choose a unique name for the printer.

Specify the printer model.

Identify the queue or device by which the printer is known to the operating system.

Set default options for the printer.

Optionally prepare initialization and reset files to execute printer-specific commands, such as commands to choose a paper tray.

If you do not create any printer groups, then NX uses a system default printer group. You cannot define printers in this empty printer group, so you cannot use it to direct plots to an actual printer device. You can use the default printer group only to convert plot files from CGM to some alternate format (EMF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF).

Sharing a Single Printer Group

In some cases, a system administrator might define printers in a single printer group for use by all NX users. You can use the printer group in any NX session executing on a workstation that can access both the printer group directory and referenced printer devices. If all users share only a single printer group, then the system administrator simply can set the UGII_SDI_SERVER_CFG_DIR environment variable to point to this single printer group.

Defining Printers in Multiple Printer Groups

System administrators or individual NX users might prefer to define printers in multiple printer groups. The system administrator might create a printer group to represent printers that are shared by all users at the site. Others might create printer groups for printers used only by users in a particular workgroup at a particular location. An individual NX user might create a printer group to manage printers and printing options that he uses most often.

To access multiple printer groups:
